About this data
The prices above are statewide averages for Texas from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). EIA surveys retail stations each week and publishes the averages, so these numbers show the overall trend and not the price at a specific station. Prices at individual stations can be higher or lower.
Why gas is cheaper in Texas
Texas usually sits below the national average at the pump, and taxes are a big part of the reason. The state charges 20 cents per gallon and the federal tax adds 18.4 cents, so every gallon carries 38.4 cents in tax. Of the 20 cents Texas collects, 15 cents goes to highways and 5 cents to public schools. The average state tax in the country is 33.8 cents, and Texas has the 46th-highest of 51, close to the bottom. California charges 73.6 cents, which puts its combined state and federal tax at 92 cents per gallon, about 54 cents more than in Texas.
Location helps too. Texas has a large share of U.S. refining capacity along the Gulf Coast, so fuel has a short trip to the station.
The gap shows up in the numbers. On April 15, 2024, GasBuddy had the Texas average at $3.17 while the national average was $3.60, a difference of 43 cents.
Texas gas prices over the past few years
Texas prices move in big swings. These are the reference points:
- November 2019: $2.24 (GasBuddy)
- August 30, 2021: $2.73, the low of that year (EIA)
- June 13, 2022: $4.64, the peak (EIA)
- April 15, 2024: $3.17 (GasBuddy)
- May 5, 2025: $2.70 (GasBuddy)
From the 2021 low to the 2022 peak, the Texas average rose $1.91 per gallon in less than ten months. Then it fell for eight weeks in a row, and EIA had it at $3.50 at the end of that run.
In 2026 prices climbed again. Over Memorial Day weekend the U.S. average hit $4.56, a four-year high according to AAA, and Texas was still close to $4 on May 27.
GasBuddy and EIA numbers differ a little because the two use different surveys. The numbers at the top of this page are EIA’s.
What a swing in price costs you
Take the calculator’s default: 1,000 miles a month at 28 mpg, which is about 36 gallons. At the 2021 low of $2.73, that costs $97.50 a month. At the 2022 peak of $4.64, it costs $165.71. That is $68 more every month, roughly $820 a year.
On a 15-gallon tank, the same swing adds $28.65 to every fill-up.
What moves the price in Texas
Taxes do not change with the pump price, so Texans pay the same 38.4 cents whether gas costs $2.70 or $4.00. That is 14% of the price at $2.70 and about 10% at $4.00. Everything else comes from the cost of crude oil, refinery output and demand. Summer driving pushes demand up, prices tend to rise in spring when refiners switch to the more expensive summer blend, and storms on the Gulf Coast can shut down refineries and lift prices fast.
Diesel is taxed higher. The federal tax on diesel is 24.4 cents, so with the 20-cent state tax, diesel in Texas carries 44.4 cents per gallon.
How to read the numbers on this page
The Texas figure is a statewide weekly average, not the price at a specific station. Stations in the same city can price very differently, so use the average to follow the trend. The table shows each fuel type, the chart compares Texas with the U.S. average over 52 weeks, and the calculator turns the current price into your own monthly cost.
FAQ
The current Texas average for regular gasoline is shown at the top of this page, together with midgrade, premium and diesel. The numbers come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and are updated once a week.
Mainly because of low taxes and short distance to refineries. Texas charges 20 cents per gallon in state gas tax, compared with 73.6 cents in California, and has a large share of U.S. refining capacity on the Gulf Coast.
Texas charges 20 cents per gallon in state tax on gasoline. With the 18.4-cent federal tax, the total is 38.4 cents per gallon. For diesel the total is 44.4 cents, because the federal diesel tax is 24.4 cents.
In recent years, the Texas average peaked at $4.64 per gallon in EIA’s weekly data, in the week of June 13, 2022. Prices came close to $4 again in spring 2026.
The dashboard at the top shows whether the price rose or fell this week. Texas taxes are fixed at 38.4 cents, so increases usually come from higher crude oil prices, refinery problems or higher summer demand.
Once a week. EIA publishes its weekly retail price update on Mondays, and this page refreshes with the new data within a few hours.
